My Room: Pt 1
Jan 28th, 2009 by evane

West side of room - futon and loads of boxes.

Still an unholy mess, and no end in sight. (NB: If you’re feeling stalkerish, go to the Flickr pages for these photos for my notes.)

East side of room - loads of shoe boxes, and other boxes. Boxes outside are mine too

Left photo: other side of room. Right: my overspill into the family room outside. I might still have a couple of boxes floating around the garage. Ray’s bringing over a suitbag with more stuff too. My wardrobe’s stuffed to the gills. One day…one day I shall go through everything and try to get rid of stuff. D:

In other news all the cardboard packaging that is flooding in with the furniture is making for a pretty stuffed recycling bin. It’s not particularly big, and they only collect every two weeks. The situation is getting pretty desperate, with my parents dumping recycling over at Dad’s work. Soon, we’ll have to start tossing out the excess into normal trash. My heart is bleeding!

Also, have decided to get these BESTA bookshelves from Ikea:

besta

I might get high gloss white doors for it, and maybe install some drawers too.

I’ll also need a chest of drawers. Thinking of something similar to this:

hemnes drawers
Hemnes chest of 8 drawers, Ikea.

Some sort of white solid wood double bed like this (the mattress is waaaay too thin and the bed doesn’t look as good in this catalogue photo as in the showroom pics)

And then a light writing desk sort of like this:

Maybe even some sort of modern take on a classic design like Gustav, but in white:

(Or Gustav without the shelves?)

“But what about avoiding Ikea!?”, you say? Yes well besides the Besta bookshelf which my parents assure me is the best system going around, the other furniture pics are just general ideas. And I still haven’t found my perfect desk yet. Seems like a lot of furniture shopping is in order. Gah.

So far white seems to be the predominant colour throughout the whole house, so I figured, why mess with the system? Colour can be provided by flashy throw pillows and bedspreads that can be changed easily. In the meantime the white furniture should make my cramped room look bigger.

Oh and I want to get this black and white striped throw rug, because I love stripes! Especially black and white ones! I’ve made a good couple of impulse purchases recently merely because they were stripey!

I need to get a LUSH shampoo bar for travelling, as I’m leaving this Friday. Unfortunately Melbourne is going through a high 30s-40 degree heat wave all this week so I’m reluctant to leave the house during the day. The only late night shopping day for suburbs is Thursday while late night shopping for the city is Friday – too late. The only suburban mall that has as a Lush store is at Chadstone.

Q: How far is Chadstone from here?
A: Not too far.
Q: So…how long does it take to drive there?
A: About an hour.

…Coming from Adelaide, that’s just too much trouble. I’d rather send Ray out on his lunch break to Rundle Mall (mind you Adelaide is also in its own 40 degree heat wave) to get it for me ^_^.

I’ve been chilling out at my new house for the last couple of days. I didn’t notice before but that year of living in my cramped inner-city flat was just that – cramped. Funny how you forget what it’s like to live in a place where you don’t know instantly where everyone is at any particular moment. And I’ve been having the sweetest sleeps. Yes, even though I’m sleeping on a futon in a room full of boxes.

The house is coming along nicely. The furniture has started coming in but it’s still a long way from “done”. My dad’s putting together some Ikea BESTA shelves today. I might order some for my own room too. Speaking of which, I’m sort of paralysed when it comes to deciding what furniture to get for my room. Everything hinges on what storage I get – double or single bed, bed frame, desk, chest of drawers all take a back seat. So. What type of storage should I get? How much? I don’t even know how much stuff I have till I unpack everything, and I can’t unpack everything without having somewhere to put them! These boxes were packed from a few months to up to a year ago. I can’t remember what I have!

I’m trying very, very, hard not to be seduced into buying Ikea furniture.
