Three 3 Minute film reviews

Three Kingdoms: Resurrection of the Dragon (2008)

3 kingdoms

It had Andy Lau in it, so I thought it would be decent. It was shot decently I guess. Overall, it…plodded. I don’t, however, fault the story on being senseless and meaningless because war during the Three Kingdoms era was often that way. I thought they could have done a bit more character development and cut out more action scenes. Mostly I just wanted to know more about the love interest (what happened to her?! Geez you’re left hanging), and the ‘rivalry’ between the lead and the guard from Changshan village felt very tacked on.

So Ray and I happened to watch the theatrical trailer for Daybreakers. It looks like a cross between The Matrix and Blade. I was particularly taken by the song that was played in the trailer.

E: Argh! That voice! The band starts with ‘P’, from the UK. The singer has black hair and he has a weird laugh.
R: ‘Placebo’?
E: I am so impressed.

Ran (1985) dir. Akira Kurosawa: An Epic Samurai Film

Not bad, but I don’t see what all the fuss is about. I did enjoy the philosophical monologues – very quotable – and I did enjoy the whole Good/Evil interplay, and it was probably incredibly ground breaking for its time, but…eh. I actually fell asleep during the battle scenes because it was just, well, men duking it out and it didn’t exactly move the plot forward.

P.S. I have yet to see a Japanese film with un-painful, un-awkward and plain un-sensuous sex scenes, and this film does not break the mold.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

I’ve been meaning to watch this film for awhile as I’ve never watched any Tim Burton films. Why? 1) This looks to be another twisted, dark, Burton film and 2) Johnny Depp’s in it.

I really had no idea what the film was about and had read no reviews. In fact the only exposure I had to it was the various movie posters that were plastered over buses. So, I was very, very surprised when they broke out in song almost from the get-go.

…and, I loved everything about it. I loved the music, the dark humour, the way it was shot and the COSTUMES. I didn’t know throat slitting could be so funny.

The star-studded cast was also a pleasure to watch. Besides Depp, other cast members included Alan Rickman, who also played Snape, Sascha Baron Cohen (Ali G), Timothy Spall (Peter Pettigrew) and Helena Bonham Carter. No wonder Mrs Lovett looked so familiar – she’s been in a number of movies I’ve actually *gasp* watched (including Harry Potter – isn’t it interesting how so many Harry Potter actors are in Sweeney Todd?). I’m also looking forward to Burton’s 2010 adaptation of Alice in Wonderland where she’ll be the Red Queen. Awsum.

The Myth (2005) – A craptastic waste of time

Just watched The Myth (2005) (Jackie Chan and Kim Hee-Seon). What an utter waste of time. Good thing I only had to sit through the last half. It had such a good premise too. And the special effects! Zomg craptastic! Worst of all was the overblown LOLDRAMA of the whole thing. You know in The Curse of the Golden Flower near the end where Chow Yun-Fatt’s battling his youngest son and his hair falls out and it’s swishing around ala Pantene ad (I lost all respect for the man that day), and where Anakin, now Darth Vader, goes “NOOOOOOO!” at the end of SWIII? Yeah. So The Myth is like those scenes, but for, like, the WHOLE MOVIE. It doesn’t even have the decency to look pretty. Well, it does from time to time but you need Crouching Tiger or Casshern level of pretteh to make my head stop hurting from the car crash that is the movie.

Also, I just noticed when I uploaded the promo poster for the movie. Jackie Chan’s character’s best friend, William, is wearing a damn fisherman’s hat. ON THE PROMO POSTER. I had one of those hats. In white terry cloth. I look terribly stupid in it, but I’m not feeling bad, because unless you’re a underage Japanese school girl with pigtails and anime-large eyes, YOU WILL LOOK STUPID. Yep, Mr Tony Leung (not THE Tony Leung, the other one), you look like a homeless bum. Geez.
