More photos from from the inner palace and (quite possibly) Qianlong’s garden.

I actually rather like Chinese traditional garden architecture. Not just “gardens” but “garden architecture”. The Chinese have a bad habit of building on every last square inch; and then paving up the rest. Well, that’s not what I like about it.

Garden architecture is not like the stiff formality of normal buildings. It tends to be airy and light. It looks like a pretty cool place to have a party on a hot summer’s day but it’d probably be pretty useless in the bitterly cold northern winters. Look at all those windows, pfft.

I’ve made no secret of the fact that I’d like to build a Chinese-style garden at some point in my life. And a Japanese one. And a sleek modern one too. Don’t forget the kitchen garden. At this rate I’ll be sitting on the residential equivalent of a theme park.

—

Made red bean soup dessert the other day. My Sunbeam StickMaster Pro immersion blender is teh awsum.

—

Did you know that the guy who founded Kambrook (Australian affordable household appliance company) invented the four way power board, the plug-in electric timer and the plastic kettle? Aussie aussie aussie oy oy oy!

—

This Saturday marks the 10th year anniversary of my Antipodean sojourn.

—

I ‘m hanging out for some Korean barbeque. There’s a great new-ish place near Her Majesty’s Theatre off Grote Street. I think it’s called Hwan-Ro? Great price and most authentic joint in town.

–

Work is piling up.
-dying-

I’m rapidly losing interest in blogging the China photos. And 90% why is because my photos are craptaculatively mediocre.

Top left: Pavilion of Something or Other. The characters were so complex and esoteric that there was even an explanation, in Chinese, for the Chinese. It’s located in the palace complex that was built for the Qing Dynasty’s Qianlong Emperor on his retirement as Emperor (I wonder if he had to sit for an exit interview?). He’s a pretty artistically accomplished man so his garden was pretty speccy.

In olden times scholars would hold poem/wine parties where they would compete in composing poems while floating cups of wine down a stream. It’s a pretty common image - there are a number of paintings depicting such parties.

This pavilion is meant to be an analogy of that. The windy recessed floor could be filled up with water, or wine as the case may be. Then everyone in the party could take turns composing poetry etc. Wouldn’t like to be the one to clean that up. I didn’t see a drain on hand anywhere.

Top right: Really really big flower. It was about 20cm in diameter, one flower head per stalk. No dupping.

Bottom left and right: Both possibly taken in Qianlong’s garden. Note photo on left: the tree is slanting so far to the right that a pole is needed to support it or else it would collapse. Gardeners often puposely bend trees at unnatural angles for artistic effect. I personally think the effect is spoiled somewhat by having to put up with walking around huge supportive poles.

Left: One of the ponds/stone bridges in the inner palace section. The main garden sections are all in the inner palace area, which is where the women are kept. Garden manuals praise the colour of stagnant ponds variously as for example “jade green” and “milky green”.

Center: Another tortured tree.

Right: Another feature in the inner palace garden. This mini grotto features a smallish pavilion built on top of a mound of stones. The entrance is that dark bit at the centre of the photo behind the woman in beige posing for a photo. The rock structure isn’t stable enough for the thousands of tourists who woul like to trudge through so it’s sealed off. I think one of the many palace intrigues that was doubtless occurring at the time culminated in a concubine dying up there.

In other news, I’ve totally rearranged my room because I’m running out of space D:
Cue had a 20% off sale for members only, which discount could be taken off the price of already discounted items. I got 2 dresses and a skirt. I was going to return one dress at a later stage because I couldn’t pick between them.

The salesgirl was all “oh, you’ll try them out at home and you’ll decide to keep them”.
Me (thinking): Yeah right whatever.

It turns out I will keep both of them -shakes fist-

The dragon path is the bit smack bang in the middle of the staircase. Only the emperor may walk on it.
I looked around for a not-so-main building, where the dragon path wasn’t fenced up. And I made sure to walk all over it

Actually it’s pretty difficult to walk on! Maybe the emperor got carried up on a palanquin, with the servants carrying it walking on the steps on either side of the path.

Large, large bronze pots filled with water everywhere - these would be used in case of fires. During winter wood would be burned under them continually to keep them from freezing over. How decadent!

Some stone carving of a thingy with a hole. More symbolism, 99% of which I have forgotten the meaning of. The square shape meant something…justice? How the Emperor was always right? The circle hole - the earth, universe, that the Emperor ruled over? And there was something to do with the function of the hole itself. And then of course there are dragons around it which is pretty much a given when it comes to Chinese stuff. So terribly over the top and gaudy.

There are wells, too scattered around the place. They seemed to be all dried up though. Or maybe the water was just a very very far way down?

Wish I posted all my China entries earlier. It’s quite painful looking back at the photos now. They look terrible!!!

This weekend was absolutely beautiful in Adelaide. Picture perfect autumn day. It was too good to waste so I cycled down to Himeji Japanese Garden, a Japanese-style garden on South Terrace.

I brought along my camera but didn’t spend too much time on it. The garden was particularly busy today. Families with kids running around, people dozing in the sun, some hipster guy who looked as if he was meditating for a couple of minutes before he started tapping away on his powerbook and even a bit of wedding photography going on too (I would have sacked the photographer, he was all “yeah, baby! Give me a smile there! Even the guys are looking good! C’mon now, grab her butt! Give me a bit of *smooching sound*.)

Anyway I found a nice big stable stone that was on the edge of the water. I brought along “Alamein, War without Hate“, a war history by John Bierman & Colin Smith. It’s about the North African desert campaign in World War II - Rommel, Monty, etc. It’s utterly fascinating. Bit of a contrast staring out at a peaceful idyllic pond while reading about death and destruction.

It was an extremely enjoyable afternoon actually. I must do it more often. It actually feels a bit decadent, being out in the open in a beautiful garden and just…reading. And I love cycling, it’s such an old school mode of transport.

Oh and did I mention I hang out at libraries, the museum and the art gallery on weekends?
And on Saturday I again snubbed the Mall for Central Market so I could make my spaghetti with home made meatballs and home made tomato sauce.

Also I am trying to use the computer less. I’ve always known the internet sucks up time arguably better spent in the fresh air, but I guess it is only now in my old age that I’m acting on it (’_').

Sidenote: When trying out some new WP themes, I noticed that WP 2.5 was out. So I’ve upgraded the WP install and happily, my RSS feed now works! I didn’t realise that the latest version came with a significant facelift so I dithered a bit thinking something disastrous had happened. It’s very web 2.0-ish. Very pleased.

Some photos of stuff found inside the palace halls.

Top left: a “blessing stick”. Or something. Apparently if you hold on to it you get good fortune. Or something. There were quite a number of these scattered around the palace, made out of a variety of sizes and materials.

Top right: Goldfish bowls. Wonder how long they could survive in those inhumane bowls. Note painting behind the bowls of a concumbine and fishbowl. Ugly concubine.

Bottom left: Sculpture of bamboo in a china bowl. The bamboo is made entirely of jade. If I remember correctly, this was in the Palace Museum, which costs extra to get into. We were debating over whether to pay extra to go in, but in the end went because it’s not like we’re ever going back hey?

Bottom right: Photo of Concubine Zhen. I thought she was ugly then but looking at the photo on wiki I suppose she’s not *that* bad. This is the room that her sister (also an imperial consort) set up in memorial of Zhen after she was executed on Dowager Empress Cixi’s orders. She was thrown into a well.

I came across this article entitled “Green with worry” via green blog re-nest.

It’s about how SF bay residents who have always been at the forefront of the “green” movement are turning from eco-conscious to eco-neurotic, and driving the people around them crazy in the process.

I can identify with that. Most definitely.

I hope the Rudd Government brings that bag tax, or “levy” as they prefer it to be called, into effect, and soon. No, not just a 25c levy per bag, but hey, go the whole hog and make it a $1 levy per bag! Ever since learning, to my horror, that our garbage bin liners at work are replaced every night as long as there is anything other than paper in it, I’ve avoided using my bin, instead either dumping my used tissues are food wrappers into either colleague’s bins or making the short walk to the kitchenette. I’ve scribbled on my bin liners with permanent whiteboard pens so I’ll know when the plastic bag has been changed. So far my record has been one and a half weeks, probably only cut short because my colleague dumped a whole load of tissues into my bin while she was sitting at my desk.

I struggle in the throes of guilt whenever I get a plastic bag from the supermarket. It’s definitely prevented me from buying stuff at convenient times when I don’t have a reusuable bag with me. I feel resentful when I see people drive shiny new 4 wheel drives. What #^$%^$%tards!!! And I’m always *this* close to lecturing people I see at the supermarket who use plastic bags for bagging fruit and veg. What’s wrong with placing them directly in the basket? You wash them again just before you eat them right?
I once saw some chinese students using a bag for 2 apples, and another bag for 2 onions. I almost flipped out. Screw it, next time I see that behaviour I WILL start yelling. One time I was helping Ray’s mom put away the shopping and I saw ONE TOMATO bagged in ONE BAG. I couldn’t think of any polite “nice” way to say anything, so I didn’t say anything. More than my feelings of outrage were my feelings of guilt over not saying anything.

Ray being my shopping partner most of the time could probably attest to my shopping manics.

The article makes a point at the end of chapter 2 in a quote from Osman, a therapist, who says

The depression, anxiety, panic, and feelings of hopelessness are symptoms of a world out of control. After all, what we’re facing is a fear of extinction. The people who are not anxious—those are the ones I’m really scared for.

I interpret that as perhaps meaning those guys haven’t cottoned on to the fact that the human race and its current wasteful, consumerist, way of life is facing extinction, and therefore by inaction are pulling the whole environment down into the dumps with them.

I might be crazy but I’m still rational. Everyone else is crazy for not being crazy.

I still dislike hippies though.

Yarrrr. Fancy.

These aren’t protected by wire. It’s a wonder none of them fall off. Wouldn’t like to be the person in charge if there was a heavy hailstorm.

All sorts of mythical beasts adorn the roofs of the Forbidden City. Dragons, lions, qilins and possibly other animals associated with good government, prosperity and longevity.

A monarchial/dictator system of government has been around for pretty much forever compared to more “enlightened” democratic systems. It existed to an extent in ancient Rome but that didn’t last long. I wonder how long democracy will last before some academic comes up with some other bright idea. Arguably that happened with communism and, hah, I suppose it would only work in a perfect world. All theory…

In other news, it’s blazing hot in Adelaide - 39 degrees. Went to this morning to volunteer for an Adelaide Festival of Arts event at the Mortlock library (one of those really old school ancient ones that look faaaaantastic) - Living Books.

From the blurb:

A library where the books are human beings! Borrow a fire fighter, a footballer or a government minister. Find out what it’s like to climb a mountain, play sport at an elite level, or live and serve in a war zone, not by reading a book but by talking to someone who has experienced it.

Discover the extraordinary capacities and experiences of ordinary people, and the courage and humanity of some of the remarkable people who live and work in South Australia.

Come into the historic Mortlock Chamber of the State Library on North Terrace, browse the catalogue, make your selection and then enter into a conversation with a Living Book. Themes include sport, politics, history, religion, the arts, sexuality, science and technology.

It was an idea that originated at a youth festival in Denmark. Municipal libraries pricked up their ears and they did their own events. Apparently it’s never been done on this scale before. This is the first year Living Books has been done at the Festival of Arts but due to positive reactions they will definitely be doing this everytime from now on.

Hopped back for lunch, went for a facial, got locked out of my apartment, then went off to the Bakehouse Theatre for “Pratchett Pieces II - The Radio Play“. It’s another Fringe event.

Blurb:

Bite-sized Terry Pratchett comedies performed as radio plays with live sound FX.

Original short stories written by Terry Pratchett. Adapted for the stage by Pamela Munt, and then for radio by Rod Lewis.
Directed by Rod Lewis

The Discworld is on the air with an outrageous collection of short stories by Terry Pratchett, performed in the crazy style of an old time radio show. THRILL to the action! LAUGH at sound effects created live on stage! SWOON over the real looks of those handsome heroes, leading ladies and worn out warriors who will stop at nothing to prove that they still have it!

Anything is possible in the outrageous world of aural illusion!

TWO INCREDIBLE STORIES

Our heroes tell us that in death, there is honour. We’ve been promised an afterlife worth fighting for. But when a fictional character meets his maker, can an author live up to the expectations of his medieval creation?

Then meet Cohen the Barbarian, who has spent his life fighting for a better future. But the Trolls under the bridge are overweight businessmen nowadays. The forests are chopped down, and there’s no one left to fight. Sometimes you can be too good at your job.
But can Cohen make one last stand for truth, justice and the Barbarian way?

It was pretty good, and very good fun watching make the sound effects live, like banging coconut shells together for horse hooves, 3 belts with little bells tied to the metal buckley end for the sound of horse harnesses, etc. In the above photo there is one guy on keyboards, 2 doing the sound effects, and 3 voice actors. They swap around too. At times I just closed my eyes because it was easier to “see” what you’re meant to be imagining.

I didn’t realise there was a theatre company (Unseen Theatre Company) specialising in Pratchett plays in Adelaide!! Maaaaaan I’ve missed out on so much T_T

The more I dig, the more I can’t believe anyone could find Adelaide boring. Sure, entertainment doesn’t leap out at you but in some ways it so much more satisfying when effort is put into finding it.

Will be watching a colleague’s band play later on tonight too - if I’m still awake.

HALP.
My RSS feed is tewtally stuff0rred!!

My old feed used to look like this: http://evanelam.photo-log.com/?feed=rss2.
My new one looks like this: http://evanelam.photo-log.com/feed/.

I updated wordpress and every plugin that was outdated recently. I’m pretty sure that my feed got stuffed up after that point, because I only really started updating again after that.

People using my old feed (David, Ray) say nothing has come through since then. Facebook automatically imports my posts as notes. It uses my old feed and it is updating fine. I subscribe to my own feed in Google Reader to make sure the feed is working properly. Well obviously I haven’t checked it recently because, using my old feed addres, it has the same problem as Ray and David.

I noticed feedburner is using my old feed address too. So I try updating it with the new address. It borks on me. Completely fails. I enter my blgo web address into Google Reader and it automatically picks my new RSS feed address (as that’s what it’s listed as in my header for the blog). It works, but the entries it shows are from way back, even less up to date than what shows up when gReader is using my old address.

If you feed my new RSS address into Feed Validator, this is the error report you get.

I’m pretty sure there is no easy way to change my feed address, or settings, through the admin options in WP (the only thing I found was in Options>Reading, and that was just how many posts to show in the feed and whether to show full texts or a summary.

Okay, so after that longwinded error report…can anyone help me =_=

I really do not want to dig around in the WP files by downloading my whole install via ftp. I’m quite decidedly rusty on PHP and the XML used in generating feeds.

Maybe the next step would just be to disable all my plugins and see if that will help - I have a couple of plugins that access the feed for reporting purposes, and a feedburner plugin too…maybe they somehow affect it?

Argh.
-pulls hair-.

I went to Saldechin last year while moseying around Adelaide, waiting for an interview to start. It’s located in one of those old bank buildings. I really like the atmosphere inside. Sort of serene, with bucketloads of grandeur. Good fusion of tradition and modern style.

It sells traditional Chinese furniture (reproduction, not antiques, if the price and finish is any indication), Chinese teas and serves as a teahouse/cafe too. The dimsum (small selection) is apparently home made. After a bad run of baos and dumplings with mysterious gristle (and the whole China poison food and cardboard char siu baos news came out at the time), their char siu bao was refreshingly…homemade-tasting, I guess. It tasted good and not artificial.

On the weekends, the place turns into a club sort of place I think. It would be an alright place to hangout for the 30-something officeworker. (haha, I’m still too young for that……………………………… >_>)

It’s pretty awesome and I’m sure is very convenient for those commuting using the tram line. I just wish it was a bit more frequent, or at least run according to the schedule. Because those trams DEFINITELY do not come every 15 minutes (or whatever the interval was meant to be).

Chrysanthenum, Himeji-jo

We spent a day at Himeji. We thought we’d take it easy and just see the castle and its attached garden.

Himeji-jo is reputed to be the prettiest castle in Japan. Having seen the castles at Hiroshima, Nagoya, Okazaki, Kanazawa and Osaka, I think that’s probably right. It sits on a hill and is built on the slope, which is why, at some angles, the castle looks like it’s leaning. That’s why some of my photos don’t look straight >_>

There was this cool wall leading up to the main donjon. It had little rectangular and triangular holes in it which I surmise was for not only decorative but defensive purposes (to shoot arrows through?).

Find out more about Himeji-jo on the wiki here.

Because it was a Sunday, there were tons of tourists around.

You could take photos with some actors dressed up in feudal-era clothes. There’s a bunch of cafes and restaurants at the front of the castle grounds and there was a pretty good jazz band playing there that day. Oh yeah and there was a wedding in the vicinity too. The weather was great that day - not too hot and not too cold. It was bright and sunny. A lovely autumn day.

Seems like at every castle the local chrysanthenum club has a chrysanthenum display. They were HUGE! So many varieties and colours and sizes…Some were used in bonsai displays, and some were used to form sculptures.

We went to lunch after that. Went down one of the shopping arcades and got some department store bento. Originally we wanted to eat them at Koko-en but we weren’t allowed to ;_;

Koko-en was constructed on the former site of the Nishi Oyashiki (Lord’s Western Residence) and other samurai residences. It is made up of 9 separate gardens, each with a different theme. These include a tea ceremony garden, a garden imitating the countryside, a garden of bamboo and a garden of summer trees.

Even though it was autumn and the gardens looked a bit dead it was still very pretty. It’s too bad we weren’t there in spring though. There were tons of sakura trees everywhere.

Himeji-jo as viewed from the front of JR Himeji station

Himeji is on the main Sanyo shinkansen line. A main road leads from the front of JR Himeji station straight to the castle and is probably about a 20 minute walk. Don’t forget to drop by at the tourist office that will be on your right if you’re walking from the station to the castle. They offer *free* bike rental for the whole day. How trustworthy is that?!

In the morning we went to the Peace Memorial Park. Loads of tourists and school excursions there.

Left: *evil aura* villain’s castle. Right: Hero’s castle. Cue birdsong.

Then we cycled to Hiroshima Castle (admission fees: 360 yen). It was pretty overcast in the morning but cleared when we got out.

Only the main donjon stands. It was a bit of a novelty walking around a museum with open windows! The cool breeze helped to ventilate the castle, and was very welcome. Wonder what it would be like in the heights of summer though, doesn’t look like there is air-conditioning there.

The exhibits at the castle museum were historical and concentrated particularly on Hiroshima’s founding in 1589 and its feudal past.

We went to the huge department store in front of Hiroshima Castle. It could have been Sogo. We went to a Western-style cafe where Ray had omu rice with demiglace sauce (his favourite) and I had mentaiko pasta (my favourite). It was pretty fancy by Australian standards and the service as usual was very attentive. And even though we were on the restaurant floor of a posh department store, our meals were under 1000 yen each! I love the restaurant-gai (restaurant floor) >_<. I love how easy it is to get good cheap food in Japan. Imagine a restaurant floor in a place like David Jones...You would NEVER get a satisfying meal for under $10.

Shukkeien is the garden to go to in Hiroshima (admission fees: 250 yen). It’s next to their Art museum and you can get a discount if you go to both. It was quite pretty if not as obsessively-manicured as some other famous Japanese gardens are wont to do (like the Tokugawa-en). In layout it actually reminds me of the Sydney Chinese Garden. And no wonder, because both gardens have been modelled on Hangzhou’s West Lake.

After that we rode over to Hibiya Park on the east side of town. There’s a Manga library there. We actually got lost trying to find the stupid place XD. It didn’t matter too much though, we had a lovely ride. We actually ended up skirting the whole perimeter of the park trying to find and entrance *into* the place. Even though it was so close to the main business and commercial area, the residential area was so peaceful and quiet! It was like stepping into a different world, or like in one of those Japanese slice of life movies. We finally found the route up to the library but, as the park is basically on a hill, the incline was so steep we had to pretty much push the bikes up all the way D:

The library was fairly large and quite crowded. All in Japanese of course so we walked round and left in about 2 minutes. Was it worth it spending 2 hours trying to find the place? >_> Well the journey is just as important as the destination right? Plus riding down that hill was very fun! We spent what felt like an hour pushing the bikes up but we got down that hill in about 2 minutes. I thought I was going to stack it a couple of times, but on the bright side I’d finally use the travel insurance I bought. I suppose the bad news is that I *would* have to use the travel insurance.

Hiroshima is famous for its oysters and okonomiyaki. Hiroshima style okonomiyaki is very different from the Osaka style. The chef pours a thin batter on the hot teppan (hot plate, lit. iron board) which makes a thin pancake/crepe. Egg wheat noodles, cabbage and bacon are stacked on top. The tricky bit is when the whole not-exactly-cohesive lot is flipped. After that the brown okonomiyaki sauce is liberally brushed on and a huge handful of spring onions pressed on top. More brown sauce and sesame seeds can then be added acording to preference. That’s the basic method but other things like kimchi, mochi, cheese and as in the above photo - oysters - can be added at various stages of the cooking process. Ray prefers the Hiroshima style because it’s not as doughy as Osaka style. I think I still prefer Osaka style because I find noodles + any other starchy product weird.

Oyster okonomiyaki, teppanyaki gyu-tan (ox tongue), teppanyaki assorted mushrooms in butter sauce, teppanyaki oysters with butter.

We pretty much ate with our right hands on our chopsticks and left hands holding bottles of sauce. We must have finished off half a bottle of QP mayonnaise and okonomiyaki sauce each!

Oh and the weird thing is we always tried to get the more “deluxe” okonomiyakis but they seemed to always mishear us and gave us the basic ones with no special fillings >_>

There are two okonomiyaki places to go to in Hiroshima and we went to both. There is okonomiyaki-mura near PARCO, and Okonomi Monogatari Ekimae-Hiroba which is in front of the JR Hiroshima station. They are whole floors of just okonomiyaki stalls so there’s heaps of variety. The stressful thing is that everyone calls out to you to come in and you feel embarrassed having to pick one over the other and then you see the sad faces from the other stalls >_<

I had to choose the place to eat both times because Ray didn't want to feel guilty over choosing one over others <_<

Oh and one thing I noticed about Japan? So many tiny vehicles!! Compare the humans standing next to the trucks for reference. If I ever lived in Japan I’d buy one of those little pickup trucks. So cute~~.

The owner of the Boston Bakery saw us taking photos of his truck and asked us why were doing that. I told (in terrible Japanese, but he somehow seemed to understand, miracle!) him because it was so small and cute. He thought it was funny and said he’d take a photo of both of us with the truck XD. Pretty friendly guy!

We stayed at J-Hoppers. When we went it was 3000 yen per person per night. They offer whole day bike hire for a very reasonable price. Getting around the city by bike is very highly recommended.

A homecoming after a lengthy time away is always made sweeter by the feeling that one now has an unlimited supply of underwear.

A homecoming after a lengthy time away is always made sweeter by the feeling that one now has an unlimited supply of underwear.

So after 2 nights in Osaka we tramped down to Miyajima via Hiroshima. Often referred to as “Miyajima Island”, it’s actually like saying “Miya island island” because the ‘jima’ bit means island :@

It is, of course, the island famous for the floating torii and temple. However throughout the whole time we were there the tide remained disappointingly low so it really didn’t look as pretty. Also that bright red colour looks so tacky D:

The island has numerous shrines and temples all over it, but eh. You can read more about the island on the wiki travel entry. We didn’t even go into the famous Itsukushima Shrine because we didn’t want to pay

This is what I call my “potato” pose, and a contemplatious deer.

There are lots of free-roaming deer around the island. The reality is not as cute as the idea though, as they are scabby and smelly. Many deer have their antlers sawn off.

Senbei, anago chikuwa, momiji manju, giant rice spatula.

You’re basically forced to walk through this shopping street to get to Itsukushima Shrine. Full of souvenir shops and restaurants selling the local specialties (basically momiji manju, eel and oysters), it’s actually not as tacky as it sounds, and reasonably enjoyable. The momiji manju (lit. momiji = red maple leaves, manju = cake) are sponge cakes with a filling inside, commonly red bean paste, cooked betwen hot plates in the shape of red maple leaves. You can see them being made in many stores and the whole process is quite mesmerizing. We got one hot off the press. And then another, and another. Delish.

I don’t quite get the obsession with senbei and other rice products like mochi (>_<). They look good and smell good but dangnabbit they are still tasteless rice thingies! I kept getting suckered into buying food based on their smell and appearance (cooking stuff right in front of the customer's eyes is such good publicity). I had a shichimi senbei. Shichimi is one of my favourite flavourings (more on that in another post) and is as tasty as you can get but the senbei was still basically FLAVOURLESS.

Miyajima is also famous for its rice spatulas - some monk invented it as a better way to serve rice without destroying the flavour/mashing rice grains to a pulp - and besides the numerous rice spatulas available for purchase, there is a giant 5 metre long one on the main shopping street.

The region is famous for its anago, or saltwater eels. Prepared differently from perhaps the more well-known unagi, or freshwater eel, it is commonly simmered instead of barbequeued and is said to have a milder and less oily taste.

We actually bought the anago sushi above from Shin-Osaka Station and originally wanted to eat it on the shinkansen but didn’t get to. Faced with the prospect of lugging it around the whole island with us, we instead frantically shovelled it in during the 10 minute ferry ride to Miyajima.

The packaging was pretty cool. The outer brown layer and the strings are from dried bamboo leaves! Wonder how they get it speckled like that. Actually it makes me think the leaf was diseased >_>.

After that we saw other similar food packaging but most were made out of printed cardboard.

It was very tasty and yum though a bit on the sweet side.

There were scores of stores selling barbequeued oysters and related dishes. It was a bit expensive for our budget (2 oysters for 400 yen) however we finally broke down and bought some from this shop off the main street.

They were big and juicy but not as tasty and creamy as I would have liked. Perhaps a bit of soy sauce to bring out the flavour more? My oyster experience was spoiled by having too much sand and grit stuck around the oyster

Overall, they were good but not *that* good. Australian oysters, if eaten in season when they are succulent and fat, would probably taste better. However the average quality oyster here would definitely beat the average quality Aussie oyster.

I had oyster udon for lunch. There were like 8 huge oysters in my bowl o_o. Not bad for 800 yen…

From the wiki:

Miyajima’s maple trees are renowned throughout Japan, and blanket the island in crimson in the autumn. Momiji manju, pastries filled with azuki jam or custard, are popular souvenirs, and carry maple-leaf emblems. Many other varieties such as chocolate and cheese are also available. Because the island is sacred, trees may not be cut for lumber. Deer and monkeys roam freely. Deer are considered sacred in the native Shinto religion because they are considered messengers of the gods.

Unfortunately due to the unseasonably hot weather, the forests and parks around the island were a vibrant hue of GREEN.

The tree with the orange flower buds above is an osmanthus. I’ve already had it in food but I encountered live, fresh blooms for the first time in Japan. The smell is completely intoxicating, I love it. I need an osmanthus tree!

We walked a bit around Momijidani Park. It’s actually very pretty there. Too bad we had to rush to get to an event (organised by the Miyajima tourist association, it included a tea ceremony, sweets, an a tour. Free for foreigners! And we FORGOT where it was meant to start!! -cries-).

And more of the streetscape around the island. The photo in the middle on the second row is a police station (according to the little wooden sign in kanji that is not in the photo). Wonder if it is still used as such o.O. It makes me think of Shinsengumi and Edo-period police or something XD

The island retains much of a small-town feel. Despite the tourist hordes on the main street, there is an overall feeling of peace. If you’re on the main street and want to escape, just walk down a sidestreet and the noise instantly drops away to an indistinct muffle. Just randomly, did you know there are no traffic lights on the island?

The island has made it to my list of “best places to retire in”.

Full-size photos, some with extra descriptions, are available in my “Japan 2007″ flickr set here.
As usual, I apologise for the bad photo quality.

Namba Station

Warning: photo-heavy post.
We spent the first 2 nights in Osaka for logistical reasons.

It was pretty fun if a bit rushed. On the first day we got lost around Umeda/Osaka station trying to find Yodobashi Camera, where Ray decided to buy the Sony H3 DSC. But we decided to head on down to Nipponbashi to check out prices there…then Bic Camera at Namba…and finally back to Yodobashi (we got lost again). Its a wonder how I was ever able to get any shopping done that day…

Despite all that, I really love Yodobashi Camera. Everything under one roof! I bought toys (check out the rows of gashapon machines!), a psp umd case, headphones and 2 headphone cases there. Spent quite a while browsing the cameras and lenses and trying to get them to sell me a wide angle lens for the Sony V3 but unfortunately it wasn’t being sold anymore. D:

We had lunch at a ramen place on the restaurant floor. I had something which turned out to be spicy hokkaido style ramen with bamboo shoots. The bamboo shoots must be canned or something. It wasn’t properly prepared so it turned out smelling like urine D: But anyway the funny thing is that the spoon for the chilli had a picture of a koala on it! Kind of ironic.

For dinner we had okonomiyaki at Dotonbori Goku Raku Shoutengai, which is a building full of shops and restaurants set in an nostalgic Meiji-period sort of atmosphere. Pretty cool, just unfortunate that it was completely empty!

The okonomiyaki was okay but the drinks were sooo diluted.

The Minami (Dotonbori, Shinsaibashi, Namba etc) area is really where it’s at for Osaka. Namba, along with Osaka/Umeda, is one of the biggest stations in Osaka. Dotonbori is the eating area and Shinsaibashi-suji is for shopping.

The Glico Man and giant crab are some of Dotonbori’s famous landmarks. The giant crab is next to Shinsaibashi bridge and appears to be a popular meeting spot. Actually I’ve set up 2 meetings in front of the giant crab when I was there - see how useful it is!

It was so fun watching all the dressed-up Japanese. From OLs to garus and Johnny’s hairstyle boys, it provided endless entertainment. No doubt I was taking mental style notes too!

This little guy has probably become one of my favourite “only in Japan” characters >_<

We stumbled upon a street of love hotels around Namba area. It’s not seedy at all though, looked very decent and respectable.
Eriko and Tomomi say that they are really good value for money when it comes to acomodation >_>
If you check in at 10pm and leave at 10am it comes to about 3000 yen each, with really nice room, jacuzzi, karaoke in the rooms and breakfast in the morning.

Also found a supermarket near our hotel. As usual all the vegetables were shrinkwrapped in plastic and PERFECT. No wonder fresh veg are relatively expensive in Japan. I guess the imperfect vegetables all get made into pickles or something. It was also cool how they had electronic price tags. Gotta love their perfectly marbled beef too.

Tomorrow is election day for Australians. Having been in Japan for the month and only coming back in time for election day, I’ve missed most of the associated circus act. Been trying to catch up (okay I only read the wiki but it’s a really good summary!!). Politics normally makes me go zzzzzzzzzz however my sense of patriotism towards Australia has guilt-tripped me into trying to make an informed vote. I mean, when can one really do something for one’s own country other than on voting day? Okay, so you could set up charities and organise… stuff but that’s not for the average person. Voting is arguably the only thing the average individual does for their country so the least one can do is make an informed choice…

It doesn’t mean it’s any less boring though!! Somehow even my law blogs have become absolutely riveting.

But to put things in perspective, just remember what voting is like in other countries…

Well well well.
Been a month away and only just got back the day before.
Seems like this should give me enough content for the next year (especially since I’m no where close to finishing China…I think I should just give up).

It’s kind of nice being back home and not having to worry about lugging around a heavy bag all day. However I’m missing the super cheap and yummy food as well as the combinis in Japan >_<.

Also wish I had time to do a bit more shopping...

If I didn't have to contend with the JR pass expiring I'd have left Tokyo and Osaka as the last cities to visit so I don't have to worry so much about lugging my purchases around the country.

Anyway, on to the photos!!

After around day 3 I got too lazy to pull out the camera though. And when I did I would generally do a few half-arsed shots. Mostly it was because it was too mafan to pull out the camera from my makeshift camera bag (I did eventually find a camera case I was happy with - on the second last day I was in Japan!!). It's amazing how many of my photos are grainy, blurry or are out of focus.

So I apologise in advance for my terrible photos.

Sometime later they just started sniffing each other’s bums >_>

From the zoo site:

The giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis) is an African mammal, and the the tallest of all land-living animals. Males can be 4.8 to 5.5 meters tall and weigh up to 1,360kg. Females are generally slightly shorter and weigh less than the males. WIthin the first week of being born, a giraffe will grow one foot in height.

A giraffe can eat 63 kg of leaves and twigs daily. The giraffe will only sleep for 10 minutes and two hours in a 24-hour period. This has led to the myth that giraffes cannot lie down and that if they do so, they will die.

The National Zoo is home to 2 giraffes, named Humbekhali (Hummer) and Ketanga.

Birds

Apparently Linus Torvalds fell in love with the penguins at the National Zoo! There was a sign with a picture of Tux the Linux penguin at their enclosure which told the story. Aww.

From the wiki:

Torvalds claims to have contracted “penguinitis” after being gently nibbled by a penguin: “Penguinitis makes you stay awake at nights just thinking about penguins and feeling great love towards them.” Torvalds’ supposed illness is of course a joke, but he really was bitten by a Little Penguin on a visit to the National Zoo & Aquarium, Canberra, Australia. Torvalds was looking for something fun and sympathetic to associate with Linux, and a slightly fat penguin sitting down after having had a great meal perfectly fit the bill.

From an interview with Linus on APC:

APC: You’ve been to Australia, and rumour has it that you were bitten by a penguin. Is that true? How did you find Australia, how many times have you been there, any favourite town or city? Was there any kind of activity like bush-walking and things like that which you really took to in Australia?

LT: I’ve been to Australia several times, these days mostly for Linux.Conf.Au. But my first trip - and the one when I was bitten by a ferocious fairy penguin: you really should keep those things locked up! - was in 93 or so, talking about Linux for the Australian Unix Users Group.

And I’d never go bush walking. Not that I mind the idea of poisonous animals (or the drop-bears), but simply because I’m just not into that whole outdoor thing. I tend to go to zoos, and I love walking around the strange creatures you have down there, but let’s face it - one of the biggest draws is that it’s warm and sunny there when it’s nasty and horrible in the northern hemisphere. I’m from Finland, so “warm and sunny” means more to me than it may do to some other people.

Otters

The otters were cute too, of course. We got there just after the keepers tossed them their food. It was pretty fun watching them wash the hard-boiled eggs in the stream before cracking them open and eating them. After they had devoured the eggs they proceeded to shit in front of us (yeah, one in one out eh? Very efficient!!). They would do it one at a time, facing their nesting box with their backs towards us. The otther would lift up its hind legs in quick sucession - right, left, right, left - its tail swished from side to side in time with the change of legs. And then wet shit would come flying out D:
It was like a very messy dance >_>

I came back later after checking everything out but they were already all asleep in the nesting box >_<

No "otters holding hands” video for me ._.

Here’s the blurb on the otters from the zoo site:

The Asian Small-clawed Otter ( Aonyx cinerea) is the smallest otter in the world.
When fully grown, these otters measure approximately 0.9m from nose to tail tip, and weigh up to 5kg. They feed
on fish, frogs, crabs, crayfish and shellfish - but they’ll eat just about anything they can get their little claws on.
The Oriental Small-clawed Otter lives in extended family groups with only the alpha pair breeding and previous offspring helping to raise the young.
Due to ongoing habitat loss, pollution and hunting in some areas, the Oriental Small-clawed Otter is now listed as near threatened.
The zoo is home to 5 otters, named Oscar, Mustache, Big-Lips, No-Lips and Omar.
