I’ve been meaning to watch this film for awhile as I’ve never watched any Tim Burton films. Why? 1) This looks to be another twisted, dark, Burton film and 2) Johnny Depp’s in it.
I really had no idea what the film was about and had read no reviews. In fact the only exposure I had to it was the various movie posters that were plastered over buses. So, I was very, very surprised when they broke out in song almost from the get-go.
…and, I loved everything about it. I loved the music, the dark humour, the way it was shot and the COSTUMES. I didn’t know throat slitting could be so funny.
The star-studded cast was also a pleasure to watch. Besides Depp, other cast members included Alan Rickman, who also played Snape, Sascha Baron Cohen (Ali G), Timothy Spall (Peter Pettigrew) and Helena Bonham Carter. No wonder Mrs Lovett looked so familiar – she’s been in a number of movies I’ve actually *gasp* watched (including Harry Potter – isn’t it interesting how so many Harry Potter actors are in Sweeney Todd?). I’m also looking forward to Burton’s 2010 adaptation of Alice in Wonderland where she’ll be the Red Queen. Awsum.
