Peking duck, originally uploaded by tr[n]ty.

waitstaff slicing off crispy skin of duck to be served with thin pancakes, spring onions, cucumber and hoisin sauce.

It wasn’t as tasty as it could have been though. It needs more salt at least. It was so tasteless i had to put on more hoisin sauce, and by that time i couldn’t taste the flavour of the duck.

Salt and pepper lobster
Salt and pepper lobster

4.25 kg lobster probably around $80 a kilo. Found it on the dry side (not faulting the technique, it’s just the style.) I still prefer it fried with ginger and shallots with noodles, which is quite a bit wetter. I love me lobster noodles. Also the sauce brings out the sweet and delicate flavour of the lobster more.

- Duck $40, Lobster ~$340, Imperial Peking, Payneham Road, Adelaide.

A couple goes for a meal at a Chinese restaurant and orders the “Chicken Surprise”. The waiter brings the meal, served in a lidded cast iron pot. Just as the wife is about to serve herself, the lid of the pot rises slightly and she briefly sees two beady little eyes looking around before the lid slams back down.

“Good grief, did you see that?” she asks her husband. He hasn’t, so she asks him to look in the pot. He reaches for it and again the lid rises and he sees two little eyes looking around before it slams down.

Rather perturbed, he calls the waiter over, explains what is happening and demands an explanation.

“Please sir,” says the waiter, “what you order?”

    The husband replies, “Chicken Surprise.”

“Ah… so sorry,” says the waiter, “I think we give you Peeking Duck.”
